Have you ever noticed that American’s seem to be going a little pet crazy? I was out doing some shopping at a nice open air market last week, and I noticed that an astonishing number of dogs were there accompanying their owners on their shopping excursion. There were dogs in clothes, dogs on leashes, dogs in purses, and even one dog that was wearing shoes! It has been reported that Americans spend over $41 billion dollars a year on our pets! With all of the pet related products available today, I can see how it would be easy to spend a small fortune on your favorite furry friend.
It does not seem like that long ago that when you decided to adopt a new puppy or dog, all you needed was a collar, a leash, some dog food, and a food bowl. Boy has that changed! I am pretty sure that there is a bigger selection of dog collars and leashes at my local pet store than there are shoes and socks for me at my local department store. There are dog beds available that look more comfortable than my own bed, and crates that come in a rainbow of colors complete with a lovely padded and carpeted floor for Fido to lounge on.
Taking your favorite four-legged friend to the groomer for a haircut and bath is just the tip of the iceberg these days in getting your pet ready to go face the world. You can now purchase outer ware for your pet for any season! How about a raincoat and rain boots for to keep your pooch dry in the rain, or perhaps a hoodie or turtleneck sweater for the brisk winter days? You can dress your favorite Retriever up in full camouflage for that yearly hunting trip, or put your favorite feminine pup in a tutu for a nice photo op in the park.
If you think that raincoats and tutus are over the top, you should take a look at the dog and cat Halloween costumes and holiday outfits. You can dress your Pug up as a bee and take him trick-or-treating with the family, or give your favorite dog a break from being a dog and dress him up as a frog or a dragon! It seems that there are now as many pet costumes available as there are kid costumes. On top of that you can even get your child and your dog matching costumes! You are not limited to Halloween fun either. You can dress up your pet as Santa Claus and get t-shirts and other clothing items for every holiday imaginable.
I think it is safe to say that dogs and cats are not just pets anymore. Our pets are family members and we can treat them like family by making them as comfortable as possible in designer dog beds and cushy crates. We can celebrate the holidays and include our pets with costumes and holiday apparel. The pet industry is definitely a profitable industry that is likely to stick around as long as people want to carry their pooches around in their purses!

Most pet owners like to think that their pet is already comfortable in their environment; however, this may not always be the case if your pet does not have anything to stimulate him or her. It is important to keep your pet mentally and physically stimulated on a daily basis because this helps to release excess energy and gives them something to do so they do not get into mischief. It is not that difficult to make you pet comfortable in his environment, it just takes a little effort and a few items that your pet can claim as their own.
Starting with a pet bed and a collar or harness will give your pet a sense of being part of the family. Your pet’s bed can be made out of anything; however, there is a much more “traditional” pet bed available through your local retailer or online. While your local retailer will allow you to bring home your purchase immediately, an online retailer will usually have a bigger and more unique selection. The size of your pet’s bed and collar will depend on their size and energy level. Since pet beds should be big enough for your pet to fit in, but small enough they feel safe, it may be a bit of a trick to find the perfect bed. Collars are much easier to purchase because most of them are adjustable so that all you need is a relative guess to get the right size.
After you have found your pet’s bed and collar set, it is time to think about purchasing a few toys to help stimulate your pet while you are at work or running errands. Pet toys are widely available and come in many different shapes, sizes, materials and prices. Giving your pets toys to play with can also save your furniture and other items from being destroyed by a pet that is bored and looking for something to do. While not every animal will like every toy that is on the market, there are a few that generally most pets enjoy. When it comes to dogs, they tend to enjoy rawhide bones and balls and cats seem to like small balls that make a tinkling sound and toys that can be filled with catnip.
Whether you want to fill your house with items for your pet or you just want to purchase a few items to keep your four-legged friend occupied, it is important to always take into consideration their size and energy level. Always remember that a comfortable pet is a happy pet and it does not take much to see to your pets comfort. While conducting your search for the perfect items for your pet, the best place to start is online. Pet supply websites tend to have a much wider variety of supplies and can offer very large discounts. It is important to ensure that your pet is comfortable in his or her surroundings because this will reduce the likelihood of behavior problems in the long run. It will also ensure that you and your pet have a happy and healthy relationship for many years to come.
