Correcting Your Grip

Pull Grip

For a "pull shot," one or both hands will invariably be too "strong", that is, located too far underneath the handle when viewed from the address position.

Slicer’s Grip

A slicer’s hold on the club will be invariably be "weak," or too far on top of the handle with the line formed between thumb and forefinger pointing to the left of the chin.

"Palmed" Grip

Another factor common to most slicers is that the grip is too much in the palm of the left hand. This prevents the wrists from cocking and uncocking correctly during the swing, and makes it difficult to square up the club face at impact. If you need proof of a "palmed" grip, check your golf glove for wear. If you have a tendency to wear a hole in the glove on the heel of your hand, then you have a palmed grip.

Proper Gripping

Try to hold the club in a more neutral position. As you look down at your grip from the address position you should be able to see 2 or 3 knuckles of the left hand, no more and no less.

Looking at your left hand, the line formed between the left thumb and forefinger should point to an area halfway between your right shoulder and chin.

The club’s handle should run from a point just above the base of the little finger of your left hand, across the fingers to the middle joint of the forefinger.

Don’t let the term "grip" make you feel that you must hold the club as if strangling it. The pressure of your grip should be firm and sure . but not overly tight.

Grip Variations

Vardon

Depending on the size of your hands and your strength, the little finger of the right hand can fit in the groove between the forefinger and middle finger of the left hand.

Interlock

Alternatively, it can interlock with the forefinger of the left hand (advisable for people with small hands or thick short fingers).

Players with weaker hands and senior golfers might try using this baseball two-handed grip.
